First Steps to Equity: Ideas and Strategies for Health Equity in Ontario, 2008-2010
With this document, we celebrate the launch of new Ontario Public Health Standards that include identifying, reporting and using information about health inequities and tailoring strategies to inform actions that meet the needs of priority populations. This document provides some ideas, steps, examples and resources to support people and organizations working for equity in health in Ontario. Equity in Health is about eliminating unnecessary/avoidable, and unfair/unjust differences in health among population groups and communities.

WHO | Commission on Social Determinants of Health
The Commission's final report came out August 2008, and contained 3 overarching recommendations: 1. Improve daily living conditions; 2. Tackle the inequitable distribution of power, money, and resources; 3. Measure and understand the problem and assess the impact of action

Health Equity Council
A community based organization, based in the Toronto area, engaging in advocacy, research, organizational change, capacity building, community partnerships and collaborations that enhance diversity, equity and inclusion in all facets of health and wellness. HEC is partnering with Health Nexus on a bilingual project to build capacity for equity in health promotion in Ontario

A comprehensive orientation guide with research findings, interview quotes, and practical tools for collaboration.

Manitoba Centre for Health Policy - MCHP
Undertakes population-based research on health services, population and public health, and the social determinants of health. MCHP develops and maintains Manitoba's population-based data repository. The site includes papers, data, links and contacts.

Canadian Policy Research Network 1994-2009
Think-tank specialized in social and economic policy research and public engagement. The CPRN Health Network carried out research and analysis on issues facing Canada's health care system until 2009 when funding ceased. CPRN's legacy is now hosted by Carleton University.

Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
Focuses on social and economic justice. They produce research reports, books, opinion pieces, fact sheets and other publications, including The CCPA Monitor, a monthly digest of research and opinion.

Canadian Public Health Association/Association Canadienne de Santé Publique - Home Page
a national, independent, not-for-profit, voluntary association representing public health in Canada with links to the international public health community.. Celebrating 100 years in 2010. Site includes articles on health determinants and links to extensive descriptions of national programs. Provides descriptions of provincial chapters and international programs.

Reducing Health Disparities - Roles of the Health Sector: Discussion Paper -Population Health Approach - Ressources - Reducing Health Inequalities - Public Health Agency of Canada
(PHAC / Health Canada, 2004) "Health disparities are avoidable and can be successfully addressed. This paper will explore the role of the health sector in addressing health disparities in Canada".

Jakarta Declaration on Leading Health Promotion into the 21st Century
The Jakarta Conference (1997) provided an opportunity to reflect on what has been learned about effective health promotion, to re-examine the determinants of health, and to identify directions and strategies for promoting health in the 21st century.

Public Health Agency of Canada - Population Health Approach - Population Health Promotion: An Integrated Model of Population Health and Health Promotion
prepared by Hamilton and Bhatti in 1996 for Health Canada. Offers a planning model that brings together determinants of health and health promotion principles.

Centre for Research and Education in Human Services
An independent, non-profit organization that works collaboratively on a range of research, education and evaluation projects funded by governments and agencies, locally, provincially and nationally.

Site contains valuable information for seniors, people with disabilities, caregivers and volunteers. There is a listing/description of community services and a directory of community support agencies in Ontario.
