Community Tool Box- Assessing Community Needs and Resources

University of Waterloo - The Healthy Communities Research Network
The Healthy Communities Research Network is a collaborative web of scholars dedicated to the study, critique, and evaluation of civic, socio-cultural, and environmental dimensions of health and well-being within community life. Health, in this context, is defined broadly to encompass a full range of quality of life issues. Community is addressed, not merely geographically, but also in terms of communities that draw together people who share common interests. The aim of the network is to produce socially relevant findings and recommendations that will advance social science, guide policy, strengthen local communities, & improve quality of life.

A research and education cluster based at the University of Waterloo with a focus on promoting ideas – innovations in data, evidence and application systems for the health sector.

The Community Guide - Task Force on Community Preventive Services
A useful website offering detailed reviews of evidence for specific prevention and health promotion interventions. It is based at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta [USA].

Population Health Research Unit - Dalhousie University
A research and support group conducting systematic research into population health, health services and their inter-relationships. It has provincial medical, clinical, and general health databases and has access to a variety of other data sources.

Manitoba Centre for Health Policy - MCHP
Undertakes population-based research on health services, population and public health, and the social determinants of health. MCHP develops and maintains Manitoba's population-based data repository. The site includes papers, data, links and contacts.

The Institute for Work & Health (IWH)
Responsible for research on workplace health and disability, evaluating designated Ontario rehabilitation facilities, and providing information on workplace health to stakeholders. The site includes events, publications, news, links, research and more.

CIHI - The Canadian Institute for Health Information
A federal not-for-profit organization. It provides data and analysis on Canada’s health system and the health of Canadians.

Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre
Based at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and works with researchers and community groups on a wide variety of topics.

Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research
CRaNHR's mandate is to conduct interdisciplinary research on the health workforce and rural and northern health care, with a view to improving access to health services, particularly in rural and northern communities. See their Events listing as well.

Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences
ICES is a non-profit research organization dedicated to conducting research that contributes to the effectiveness, quality and efficiency of health care in Ontario. The site includes research information, news, documents and data.

Institut de recherche sur la santé des populations - Institute of Population Health
The IPH coordinates, initiates, and supports interfaculty and multiparty, transdisciplinary research and training in Population Health at the University of Ottawa.

Community Health Research Unit
This bilingual website is full of useful information, publications, monographs and links to public health resources. Their Program Evaluation Tool Kit and Perspectives journal offer a summary of developments in the field.

Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis :: McMaster University
CHEPA disseminates research evidence to decision makers in the health sector. The site includes searchable literature, news and projects, links, and knowledge exchange event listings (workshops, seminars, etc.).

Health Information Research Unit - McMaster University
McMaster Clinical Epidemiology unit's website for health/medicine informatics. Has the HIRU database, links to Cochrane Collaboration and Evidence-Based Practice.

Centre for Research and Education in Human Services
An independent, non-profit organization that works collaboratively on a range of research, education and evaluation projects funded by governments and agencies, locally, provincially and nationally.

Canadian Heart Health Dissemination Project
(2000-2006) Studied the provincial heart health dissemination projects that make up the Canadian Heart Health Initiative. Designed to investigate the nature of the relationship between dissemination and capacity for heart health promotion.
